Alumni Stories

Shi Huajie: Bringing Light to Thousands

“My first impression of Kenya was bold and optimistic,” said Shi Huajie (China), an alumnus from the School of Vehicle and Mobility. After leaving the ivory tower, he arrived in the fields of rural Kenya to help expand the local solar energy market, to bring sunlight into thousands of homes.

“I told them that my phone was a 24/7 customer support center and that they could come to me any time if they were troubled by a solar energy-related problem,” recalled Shi on his experience following up and strengthening customer relations in Kenya.

Shi sometimes had to introduce the products door-to-door where he was greeted with a local courtesy – Ugali and Mandazi (Kenyan homemade pasta). “The warmth of the local people reminds me that the BRI should be based on win-win cooperation so that China-Africa relations can move forward steadily.”
