For all STEM graduate students, having a paper returned by peer reviewers is as common as being turned down during a profession of love. It may be hard to accept at first time, but never give up, because you will find a way to cope with it! Facing reviewers’ comments is similar to confronting questionings from your significant other, you have to argue with logic and reasoning, and most importantly just accept it whenever needed. Now if you are still confused about submitting your manuscript and responding to reviewers’ comments, please carefully read the following announcement.
In response to the school’s appeal to improve students' academic language skills and writing literacy, School of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Chemical Engineering hosted the first seminar of serial event “How to publish your first scientific paper?”. We invited Professor Qiang Zhang from Department of Chemical Engineering and Professor Xiaodan Sun from School of Material Science and Engineering to share their experience and stories of publishing papers. Over one hundred students and professors attended the event.
Because of the popularity of the first seminar, the Graduates Unions of Department of Chemical Engineering and School of Material Science and Engineering will co-host the second seminar of the serial event “How to publish your first scientific paper?” The aim is to help students who are new to the scientific community to learn how to submit their manuscript to scientific journals and respond to reviewers’ comments. For this purpose, we would invite Professor Chong Zhang from Department of Chemical Engineering and PhD candidate Ziming Cai from School of Material Science and Engineering to share their experience and insights. Hopefully, this seminar will strengthen our academic ideas, sharpen our innovative character, and lay a solid foundation for scientific research.
Guest Speakers
Professor Chong Zhang obtained his bachelor and PhD degree, both from Tsinghua University, in 2002 and 2008, respectively. In 2010, he started as an assistant researcher in Tsinghua University, and now he is the associate researcher in Department of Chemical Engineering of Tsinghua University. His researches focus on the fundamental research of application of biochemical engineering in synthetic biology. He intends to use the principle of engineering to design biologic system while utilizing the method of biology to facilitate engineering applications. From all molecular, cells and colonial levels, Professor Zhang works in artificially synthesizing new biocatalysts, creating new microcellular manufactory and new microbiome for various applications in the industry. Currently, Professor Zhang leads in three research projects, participates in five research projects (including four state-level project and one major international collaboration project). He has published 23 papers, including 18 SCI papers. Professor Zhang has now one PCT patent, thirteen Chinese patents.
Ziming Cai’s doctoral research focuses on functional ceramics. He has published 15 SCI papers as first author (including 3 in Journal of Materials Chemistry A, 2 in Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 3 in Composites Science and Technology and one in Applied Physics Letters). He won the National scholarship of graduate students in 2019, the second-class scholarship of Tsinghua University in 2018 and the second-class Guanghua scholarship of Tsinghua University in 2016.
