During this extraordinary year, from July 20th to 28th Tsinghua University will host a special online Global Summer School (GSS) 2020, entitled Toward a Post-Pandemic World. Bringing together Tsinghua’s finest educational resources and well-known Chinese and overseas professors through lectures, webinars, and interactive tours and performances, GSS will delve into our post-pandemic world in various disciplines, including economics, politics, society, education, climate change and leadership. Tsinghua GSS welcomes students from different backgrounds to come together to engage with the opportunities and challenges of our post-pandemic world and to explore solutions for a more sustainable future.
In recent years, with dramatic advancements in hardware, algorithms and data, and technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown great power and potential in increasing productivity and finding solutions to pressing problems. Yet at the same time, its development and expansion also bring forth technical, economic and ethical issues.
For Day 5 of our upcoming Global Summer School (GSS) 2020, Toward a Post-Pandemic World we will be exploring the current focus and core issues surrounding artificial intelligence.

Day 5: Artificial Intelligence Application and Governance
Tsinghua host and academic support for Day 5: the Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), the Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG), the Department of Computer Science and Technology, and Schwarzman College.
To begin, we will explore the New Wave of Digitalization from technological and industrial perspectives with renowned scientist, technologist and business executive Dr. ZHANG Yaqin. Dr. ZHANG joined Tsinghua University as the Chair Professor of AI Science in 2020, and established the Tsinghua Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR). He is well-known for his expertise in AI and his career as business executive. He was President of Baidu Inc. from September 2014 to October 2019. Prior to joining Baidu, he was a key executive of Microsoft for almost 16 years.

Then we will be looking into how governance works with AI, with our webinar: Artificial Intelligence Application and Governance, moderated by Professor LIANG Zheng and participated in by experts and scholars from government, enterprises and other departments. Professor LIANG now serves as the Professor in the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University, as well as research fellow and Deputy Director of the China Institute for Science & Technology Policy at Tsinghua University (CISTP), and research fellow and Vice President of the Institute for AI International Governance, Tsinghua University (I-AIIG). The main areas of his research focus on science, technology and innovation policy, the globalization of R&D, IPRs and standardization, emerging technology and innovation governance.

To put AI more into context and let you experience it in action, thanks to the Tsinghua University Department of Computer Science and Technology, we will be taking you on a virtual tour of two major technology companies! These visits are arranged in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Technology’s own summer school program this year, entitled Deep Learning. These tours should not be missed!
Meanwhile, we will also have Schwarzman College holding another lecture about leadership: Aiming to a life of impact—My understanding about leadership, led by Professor QIAN Xiaojun and moderated by Professor David Q. Pan.
