Tsinghua alumni in North America holds fourth Convention

The fourth North America Tsinghua Alumni Convention was held virtually from September 18 to 19.

Over 1,000 alumni of Tsinghua University from North America and the rest of the world at-tended the virtual conference.

Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong, who is also president of the Tsinghua Alumni Association, addressed the fourth convention via video link and extended warm congratula-tions on behalf of the University on its successful opening.

Qiu said that the opening of each such meeting had been a valuable time for the alumni of Tsinghua University to join together and share their deep love for the University.

Qiu reviewed the celebrations for the 110th anniversary of Tsinghua University and empha-sized that a 110-year-history had made the University more confident and well prepared, en-abling it to focus on affairs of great importance and lasting value in its future development.

Qiu noted that Tsinghua University would further deepen its reform and promote high-quality and content-oriented development in the future. He hoped that all Tsinghua people would continually work hard to demonstrate the strength of Tsinghua University, integrate their personal endeavors with the University’s development, make new achievements in their own workplaces, and have a bright future in parallel with the sound development of Tsinghua University.

Three distinguished guests delivered themed lectures at the main session of the convention on September 18.

Stephen A. Schwarzman, Chairman, CEO and Co-Founder of Blackstone, Founding Trustee of Schwarzman Scholars, Tsinghua University, talked about how to actively promote China-US exchange and cooperation during an interview with Hu Gang, an alumnus of Tsinghua who majored in mathematics.

Pan Qingzhong, executive deputy dean of Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, spoke with Zhao Ting, an adviser to the Tsinghua Alumni Association of Greater New York, about the cultivation of leadership among young people.

Lin Xihong, a professor of biostatistics at Harvard University, an academician of the US National Academy of Medicine and an alumna of Tsinghua University, shared her story about transforming from a graduate of Tsinghua to a world-class scholar in biostatistics.

In addition, participants discussed topics related to the development of personal careers and the growth and education of younger generations, as well as the passion and social respon-sibility of Tsinghua graduates at the two parallel sessions held on September 19.

According to the organizers, the North America Tsinghua Alumni Convention has been held every two years since the first conference in New York City in 2015. The second and third meetings were held in Seattle and Toronto in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

The fourth North America Tsinghua Alumni Convention was co-sponsored by the Tsinghua Alumni Association and the North America Federation of Tsinghua Alumni Associations, and jointly organized by the Tsinghua Alumni Association at Greater Boston, and the Tsinghua University Alumni Association, Vancouver.
