2017 Tsinghua International Summer School-Environment Opened in the School of Environment

SOE, Tsinghua August 8th, 2017 (Correspondents Lei Duan, Xi Jin, Xiaojuan Gao, Shi Chen) On the morning of August 7th, 2017, the opening ceremony of the 2017 Tsinghua International Summer School-Environment was held at the East hall in the School of Environment.  Professor Bin Yang, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Professor Kebin He, Dean of the School of Environment attended the opening ceremony, as well as distinguished guests from other countries including Mr. Corrado Clini, former Italian Minister of the Environment, Territory and Oceans, Professor Michael B. McElroy, Gilbert Butler Professor of Environmental Studies from Harvard University and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

On behalf of Tsinghua University, Professor Bin Yang welcomed students from all over the world to study and explore environmental issues in Tsinghua. He also gave a brief introduction of Tsinghua University to the students. He encouraged all the students to participate actively in diverse activities with cooperative and inclusive attitudes, and to cultivate leadership and sense of responsibility during the summer school.

Professor Kebin He praised the students for joining the Tsinghua International Summer School-Environment. He gave an introduction of the School of Environment and the International Summer School, and expected all the students to harvest satisfactory results after the 14-day study.

The summer school program was launched by the School of Environment in 2013 and upgraded to a university-level program in 2016. This year's summer school, with the theme of “Culture, Environment and Innovation”, has attracted 110 students from more than 20 countries including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Australia and Egypt. Harvard University and Imperial College London are the two partner universities, from which a total of 40 undergraduates attend the summer school and well-known professors will participate in lecturing.

The summer school arranges a series of lectures and field trips. Professor Michael B. McElroy from Harvard University, also Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the mentor of former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Professor Dale Jorgenson from Harvard University, Professor Yang Zhang from North Carolina State University, Mr. Corrado Clini, former Italian Minister of the Environment, Territory and Oceans, and many other prominent academics and senior officials are invited to give lectures. Students will also visit Gaobeidian Wastewater Treatment Plant, China Meteorological Administration, Guanting Reservoir Wind Power Plant, as well as Confucius’ hometown Qufu City, the Great Wall, the Art Museum of Tsinghua and so on to get a close understanding of the environment in China and experience Chinese culture. In addition, the learning process advocates teamwork and communication, and the students will work in groups and complete their project reports.
