The Institute of Economics organized a learning exchange event for Chinese and foreign college students at Room 1204 of the 3rd teaching building on September 29, 2017. Students from Australia’s Macquarie University walked into classrooms of Tsinghua University and jointly discussed social hot spots in both China and Australia with Chinese students. Prof. Liu Ying presided over the exchange event. He first expressed his warm welcome to foreign students, and introduced the subjects and links of the learning exchange.
The event was divided into groups, with each group conducting learning and discussion surrounding a designated or optional subject, and sharing the discussion results. Students searched accurate data and case studies on Internet, carried out heated discussions and made adequate preparation in 60 minutes. In the second link, each group shared their viewpoints through discussion on the stage one by one. Some groups analyzed the status quo and gave advice on future improvements surrounding tourism, trade and education, three important economic communication fields between Australia and China, while some analyzed the Belt and Road Initiative and the Sino-Australia relations. They drew an interesting world map on the blackboard, and pointed out the advanced industrial structure of agriculture and service industries in Australia and that of manufacturing in China can be organically complementary. They also noted that China’s Belt and Road Initiative can further strengthen the partnership of mutual benefit between the two countries, as well as facilitate the development of multiple industries in Australia. Richard, a student from Macquarie University, vividly demonstrated the achievements the two countries have made in trade and challenges facing them with the use of storytelling. Each group performed very well, and students gave each other gifts and left the contact information in the last link.
As many as 14 foreign students took part in the exchange activity, and they aimed to understand Chinese economy, culture, education and trade through their visit to Tsinghua University. The fascinating learning exchange event, attended by 30 students in total, has accumulated experience in improving the expression ability in English of students at Tsinghua University and promoting academic and social exchanges among young people at home and abroad. The exchange event was organized by Zheng Hongmei, with strong support of Prof. Li Bangxi.
