The Tsinghua Institute of Economics was established in December 1993 and has become an important component of Tsinghua University. The Institute focuses on the teaching and research of economic theory and offers post-doctoral, doctoral, graduate and undergraduate programs. The faculty includes 18 highly qualified professors and young researchers . A number of renowned scholars have been appointed as part-time professors, including Li Cong, Wu Shuqing, Chen Qingtai, Jiang Qiangui, Mao Tianqi, Liu Meixun . Teaching & Research The Institute provides academic research and training. It addresses cutting-edge economic theoretical issues as well as interdisciplinary economic practices, and is concentrated in four areas of teaching and research. First area is the Political Economy in China. This area uses methodologies and theories from Marxist Political Economy, Neo Political Economy, and International Political Economy to form a unique Tsinghua School of Political Economy in the transformation of China. Second area is the New Theory of Economic History, applying the theories of institutional change including property-right, sovereign state and social ideology to analyze the economic history, history of economic thoughts, economic history of the market as well as the history of international economic relations. It aims to further understand and improve China's socialist market economic system through understanding empirical evidences and developing economic theories. The teaching and research fields also include Institutional Economics and Development Economics. Third area is the Chinese Economy. China's reform and transformation of its politicaleconomy has followed a different developmental path compared with most other countries. This area focuses on constructing a new theoretical paradigm to promote economics in the world based on China’s economic history and relying on a multidisciplinary platform of Social Sciences. Fourth area is the Theory of New Economy. This addresses network economics and big data issues including platform economic theory, Internet banking, big data analysis, and economics of innovation and entrepreneurship. It seeks to improve understanding of the evolution of new technology driving the new industrial revolution, to explore interdisciplinary approaches to information science and economics, and to broaden the scope of innovation in economics teaching and research. International Outreach An important goal of the Institute is to provide its students with a solid theoretical foundation including microeconomics, macroeconomics and other economics courses, computer science and advanced mathematics courses, as well as political, social science, psychology and other humanities and social science courses. To broaden their horizons students are encouraged to study abroad through student exchange programs. The Institute has close academic ties and cooperation with elite universities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge and California Institute of Technology. In recent years, more than 90 percent of our undergraduate students chose to enter graduate school, of which 40% choose to go abroad to study. Academic Activities Since its inception, the Institute has been involved in a hundreds of important research projects. Sponsors include the National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, Humanities and Social Sciences Projects of the Ministry of Education, and the numerous provincial and ministerial projects; and has published a large number of academic monographs, textbooks and domestic and international peer-reviewed journal papers. In recent years, the Institute of Economics carried out academic activities such as "The Workshop for Quantitative History" and "The Workshop for Big Data in Social Sciences” and annual international conferences on “The Chinese Economy” and “Internet Economy & the Big Data,” as well as ad hoc conferences such as the Chen Daisun Lecture of Theoretical Economics and the Workshop for Political Economy. The Institute works closely with companies such as Alibaba Group and Minsheng Bank on research providing a better understanding of e-commerce and Internet finance.
